PAGE iZ t 9 "The offerings that we make for the works of the Vicar of Christ are an abiding evi- dence of our Faith. But above all else, our offerings presented to the Holy See are evidence of that charity which has always characterized the true followers of Christ." 'Our" poor and unfortunate brethren from many pa ts of the earth appeal for help ' Let therefore be very generous. Lane Bishop" of Rockford a t THE OBSERVER Must Fight Comm.nism Within L.w 0 CINCINNATI -- (NC)-- An au- thority on communist subversion stressed the "absolute necessi- ty" of coping with communism "within our own democratic structure of law." Fern C. Stukenbroeker, special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, warned: "The an- swer is not hysteria, witch hunts or violation of civil liberties. The answer is education and faith in our democratic and religious heritage." Mr. Stukenbroeker, who holds a Ph.D. in East European and Russian history, referred to com- munism as "a way of life," and a "twentieth century Mephisto-i Ipheles''' I ILargest Subversive Organizationi In an intervie~ at Cincinnati] FBI headquarters (June 15), he made it clear that the Commu-i nist party is today "the largest single subversive organization in the U.S " and that it remains "dedicated to the overthrow of everything we hold dear." To deal with the threat, it is necessary for Americans to "take the time to study com- munist claims, techniques and goals, to learn the true strategy and tactics of the Communist party." Another positive step that must be taken by Americans is to "be able to better articulate our own democratic heritage," said Mr. Stukenbroeker. Tradition of Freedom "We in America have a great tradition of freedom," he said. "We must stand for something lest we fall for something." lie also called on Americans to "know more about our his- tory--the principles of free gov- ernment, that this is a govern. ment of laws and not of men that in America we respect the dignity and sanctity of the hu- man personality." The Missouri-born Methodist, who teaches Sunday school in Al- exandria, Va added that the most important element of an anticommunist program must be "faith in God -- faith that divine principles guide the destiny of men." "We have the spiritu$1 ammu- nition that is needed," he said. He came here to address a pub- lic meeting sponsored by the U.S. Citizens' Committee for Cincinnati. Scores Violence SOUTH BEND, Ind.--(NC)-- Violence on the American scene today is an "elaborately staged" front for communist subversion, a bishop has claim- ed. Bishop John King Mussio of Steubenville, O said the via- lence includes useless strikes, race rioting, gangs of youths who terrorize communities and a diet of brutality fed to movie and TV viewers. He claimed the violence is a calculated communist program designed to upset the nation's stability and to foment unrest which serves as a breeding ground for communism. Bishop Mussio made the point in an article for the June 24 is- sue of Ave Maria magazine published here. I t~I |lB I |IR i III 'lii Dial WO 3-5409 330 S. Wyman Rockford, III.
