FAGE I0 THE OBSERVER N m FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 1961 TO BE DEDICATED SUNDAY -- This recently completedI church-school combination at St. Thomas More parish, Elgin, I will be dedicated Sunday April 30, at 4 p.m. by the Most Rev. [ Loras T. Lane. The building, a contemporary structure of brick and cement block construction, is situated on a 15-acre tract of land and contains four classrooms, principal's office, faculty lounge and gymnasium, which will serve temporarily as the church. It also contains a parish hail which may be converted into four classrooms. Classes in the new structure began Sept. 12, 1960. INTERIOR OF CHURCH--This picture shows the clean, simple lines of the contemporary style temporary church at St. Thomas More parish, Elgin. This part of the recently completed struc- ture will eventually be used for a gymnasium. The entire building was begun in the fall of 1959 shortly after the parish was established and The Rev. Walter C. Roberts ap- pointed its first pastor. The new parish was formed by divid- ing St. Laurence parish to give more adequate church and school facilities for the city. The first Mass in the new church was offered Sept. 4, 1960. GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY--The Rev. Walter C. Roberts, new pastor of St. Thomas More parish, Elgin, is shown with a group of his parishioners during groundbreaking cere- monies for the new church and school in September of 1959. Almost ilnmediately crews began the big task of building the combination structure. Patron of the church is the courageous English layman martyred under Henry VIII. The Rev. Walter C. Roberts NEARING COMPLETION--Not too very long ago this is how the new church and School at St. Thomas More parish in Elgin looked as workmen labored to finish the contemporary structure of brick and concrete block. At this stage of construction parishioners were attending Mass at the West Side Elementary school with the permission of the Elgin school board. OUTLINE OF A CHURCH--This laminated wood skeleton ris- ing from the snow during the winter~ of 1959-1960 gave only a rough idea of what the new church-gymnasium at St. Thomas More was too look like, but it was the start of a new parish. Bishop Lane established the new parish "for the greater good of souls" in the area since the facilities of St. Laurence parish "were taxed well beyond their ability."
